When I a Place Doesn’t Agree with You

3D printed parts, resin, postcard

Tao Hai Yue’s installation When a Place Doesn’t Agree with You delves into questions of historical authenticity. Her work considers how newcomers enter environments shaped by history and tourist imagery. The postcards promise an understanding of a place, while exposing the fragility of this notion. Sculpted apples and a 3D-printed tree placed on a grass mat mimic the artificiality of historical reconstructions and expose the illusion of permanence they suggest. The mat is reminiscent of hot summers in 1980s and 90s China, when people reclaimed public space by sleeping along the streets. The fragmented and carefully balanced objects explore temporary structures as a state of never fully settling.

陶海悦的装置作品《When a Place Doesn’t Agree with You》围绕历史真实性展开。
