						The Narrative of Becoming

This kinetic sculpture unfolds from an extremely ordinary object: the bamboo clothes hanger, a common
household tool widely used in China. Lightweight, resilient, and foldable, the hanger carries a shared
everyday memory.

						
For the artist, the hanger is closely connected to repeated experiences of moving, folding, packing, and
unpacking while living in Europe — a temporary state of life between different places. The work begins
from a compressed form, stored inside a box, and becomes fully expanded in the exhibition space.
Through repetition, stacking, and displacement, a small domestic unit grows into an imagined structure,
almost like a temporary architecture.

						
The sculpture draws inspiration from scenes of drying laundry in alleyways, where hangers are often
used in groups and suspended high on wires above the street. Seen from below, they form dense and
improvised networks. Here, the hanger is no longer an isolated object but part of an extendable system
shaped by gravity and balance. In the sense of Deleuze’s “becoming,” the individual is never fixed, but
continuously formed through contact with environments, systems and others.

						
The motor sets the work into a slow rotation and slight sway, inviting viewers to experience the structure
from multiple angles.

This sculptural pair combines a Qing Dynasty carved wooden panel with support structures generated
during the process of 3D printing. Together, they create an ongoing visual contradiction — a sense of
material and temporal misalignment.

						
The carved panels, produced between the18th and 19th centuries, once belonged to traditional
Chinese domestic architecture, most likely used as decorative or functional elements in furniture or
interior partitions. With rapid urban redevelopment throughout the twentieth century, many such
architectural fragments were removed from their original contexts and entered flea markets as
discarded building material.

						
Instead of repairing the divide between the past and the present, the work holds the viewer in a shifting
state of perception, where time no longer feels linear but appears fragmented, layered, and out of sync.

In German supermarkets, the artist noticed that most Asian fruits are often placed in the section labeled
“Exotic Fruits” (Exotische Früchte). Mandarin oranges, however, are not included in this category and
are instead treated as an ordinary fruit. This small but clear difference led the artist to reflect on how
certain objects become integrated into mainstream systems of consumption, and where the boundary
between the exotic and the ordinary is drawn.

						
Once something is recognized as ordinary, the long and complex process of acceptance often
disappears from the view. The shoe is understood here as a kind of social skin — an everyday object
that mediates between the body and the exterior world. As something we must wear in order to move
through public space, it becomes a quiet symbol of belonging and integration. For this work, the artist
hand-sewed mandarin orange peels into a pair of “skin” shoes and preserved them through resin
casting, capturing the fragile process of becoming ordinary.

During her residency in Switzerland, artist Tao Hai Yue frequently pondered how people should reconsider their perception of Nature. In this process, she spent several weeks collecting stones near Nairs and arranged them into a table of food-like stones, drawing inspiration from the popular 1990s Chinese stone collection culture of 'stone banquets'. Within this cultural concept, the boundary between art and nature blurs, emphasizing the importance of imagination and poetry.

						Compatibility (2024), a series of temporary sculptures balancing incompatible objects, was created during the artist’s residency in Scuol, Switzerland—a small Alpine town rich in mineral waters and rocky landscapes. The sculptures incorporate found objects from Fundaziun Nairs alongside natural materials such as water, soil, and stones. In Chinese, "water and soil" symbolize local culture and environment. The idiom "水土不服" (shuǐ tǔ bù fú), literally meaning "water and soil do not suit," describes the discomfort experienced in unfamiliar surroundings. The artist explores this unease and the fragile sense of compatibility people encounter when adapting to new environments, continuously adjusting objects to examine the tension between instability and balance. Inspired by the forms of gongshi, bonsai, and traditional gardens, the sculptures balance delicate elements to evoke a struggle for equilibrium while capturing fleeting moments of hope and poetry amid chaos.兼容性 (2024) 是一系列平衡不兼容物体的临时雕塑，创作于艺术家在瑞士施库尔的驻地期间。这座位于阿尔卑斯山脉的小镇富含矿物水和岩石资源。雕塑作品结合了从奈尔斯艺术基金会（Fundaziun Nairs）收集的物品，以及水、土、石等自然材料。在中文中，“水土”象征着地方文化与环境，而成语 “水土不服”（字面意思为“对水土的不适应”）则表达了人在陌生环境中所感受到的不适。艺术家通过不断调整物体，探索人在新环境中经历的不安和脆弱的兼容性，同时审视介于不稳定与平衡之间的张力。这些雕塑借鉴了拱石、盆栽和传统园林的形态，通过平衡脆弱的元素，暗示了一种努力维持平衡的挣扎，并在混乱中捕捉到希望与诗意的瞬间。

2023Shòu Cháo (受潮） is the damp condition where items are damaged, deteriorate, and lose their original functions due to long-term exposure to alternating damp environments under specific East Asian weather conditions. This East Asian weather condition, called plum rain season, occurs from June to July each year, coinciding with the ripening of plums, and is particularly significant in the Jiangnan region of China, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan. This period is characterized by continuous cloudy and rainy weather; damp conditions can lead to mold growth on household items and buildings, often referred to in folk parlance as 'mold rain.'

Artist Tao Hai Yue discovered a damaged family album by this specific East Asian weather condition, containing childhood family fotos in her old apartment while she was back in China in 2023. Hangzhou, is located in the southeastern coastal region of China known as Jiangnan, which is a very humid city with over 147 rainy days in a year. Due to the lack of proper moisture control facilities in the apartment, many photos, books, and items were severely affected by dampness and mold. These weather-damaged items were supposed to be abandoned like the old apartment, but she decided to rescue them. The images in the photos have become unrecognizable due to the Shòu Cháo, and some are partially affected, capturing the process of moisture engulfing those images.


This artist book commemorate the things Tao considers precious but vanished due to demolished buildings, continuous rainy seasons, and the proliferation of mold in the city where she was born.The first dummy of the book was completed during the artist book workshop in Berlin, Germany, conducted by artist Claudia de la Torre.

Artist Tao Hai Yue turns a meadow slope in Tenna, Switzerland, into a playground for Riitschindlen, an ancient summer tobogganing game over 100 years ago in the Graubünden region. She works with a local carpenter to re-create this skateboard by hand from a wooden shingle. A long-vanished tradition is revived as a unique medium that can inspire playful interaction between people, the environment, and objects.

Inspired by Paul Connerton's "How Societies Remember”, this intervention explores how while
monuments are built with the purpose of being remembered, they are also being forgotten at the
same time. 18 passers-by were invited to do a temporary site-specific art intervention in front of a
Mao Zedong Memorial . The second part of this work ( under the same name ) was set up at this
